I think I’ve just reached the end of my pre-blogging collection, and now I’m simply left with a bunch of pictures and a few notes from each day. It’s sorta fun to be more and more brief for the sake of posting more regularly. Let’s see if I can recall why I made these notes:

barstow koa
wake early
dig site
-legacy of guy
calico ghost town
-train, ice cream, mine cave, why is it there?
driving
koa swimming
hot
star trail shot

Stayed in Barstow, it was hot… somewhere around 95+ if I recall correctly. They said it was cool for that time of the year. I woke up early and had the chance to do some chores (laundry) and even take a pretty sunrise style photo. The desert is a nicer place in the early morning when things have had a chance to cool off and the sun hasn’t heated things up at all. We got moving and went to see a cool archeological dig site – the guy there had been working the site for some crazy number of years… I think it was in the neighborhood of 60, but that just seems intense, so maybe it was just 40. Even still, I don’t know anyone who has worked in one place for so long anywhere. Yikes. Afterwards, and more in the heat of the day we checked out Calico, a ghost town somewhere near Barstow. I guess in it’s hay-day it had something like 3000 people and so a few buildings were still around. Most of it had been rebuilt and redone to encourage tourists, and it sure seemed like a popular spot considering the 102+ temperature (in the shade, mind you). Very touristy, but still interesting to look at the area and wonder what it might have been like. Oh, and ice-cream is really tasty when you’re hot.

[Note: thanks for your patience in waiting for me to get around to posting this stuff. I had grand intentions to fully write up each day to chronicle our experiences, but now that we’re back and emmersed in “real life” I find myself distracted from the good ‘ol blog. I’ve updated my goal to have a quick blurb and the photos from the affiliated day, which I think just might be more doable. Stay tuned!]

This morning after waking, showering and getting ready to roll, we decided to re-visit good ‘ol General Sherman in the light. It wasn’t as otherworldly to see the giant trees in the daylight, but heck if it was easier to see more details! I went around snapping more photos and doing a heck of a lot of bracketing in hopes that some day I’ll have the interest to put together an HDR image to get all the details possible.

Needless to say, it was a spectacular sight, but with more tourists around, I think I was somewhat jaded. I even found myself taking pictures of tourists doing silly things like leaning over a log and whistling to convince a chipmunk to come out for a picture… On the bright side though, we did get the chance for two bear sightings, which I really appreciate. The first sighting was of a sow and her two cubs who were meandering through the forest below the trail. They didn’t seem to mind that we were there, and, as far as I’m concerned, they were pretty tiny black bears. I’m not sure if the coastal diet is much more robust, but most of the black bears I’ve seen in Juneau would dwarf these guys. The cubs were cute and just what you’d expect to see if your only experience with the bear species is your stuffed teddy at home. The other sighting was of a single bear away from most people, and this time, at first I thought it was a large dog walking along a ridge.

Anyhow, after we got out of the park, we proceeded down several thousand feet of elevation down to San Luis Obispo county. Bill and Sharon have business there, so we stopped by for a hello and a helping hand. The evening was great, and in the end, we decided to sleep near the beach rather than moving down the road right away so the kids could wake up near the beach.

This is just going to be a major dump of photos for your perusal. If you’d like more detail about one, please comment on the image, and I’ll be sure to reply. There’s just too many to pre-populate all the captions & descriptions before I pass out.

Yeah, so in my mistaken last entry I posted the photos from the 10th day of September rather than the 10th day of our trip. Thanks for noticing, y’all.

This should be the correct batch, but if anyone notices anything amiss, please let me know asap! 🙂
